Frank explains what's involved in
creating a stained glass project:
''After a design has been chosen, the opening or frame is measured and a
template taken if needed.
The outline of the panel is then marked out on the cartoon (drawing).''

''With the proposal of the design
as a guide, a rough pencil sketch is made.
Then using a felt marker, the cut-lines are drawn.
Accuracy here is of the utmost importance as the line is representative of the
heart (middle) of the lead.''

''Each individual piece is then
cut and broken out.
Again every piece must be cut to the millimeter from the cartoon to insure the
sections lead up correctly.''

''Occasionally when opaque
glasses are used a light-box is required to see the cut lines.''

''All the pieces are laid out as
they appear in the cartoon.''

''The individual pieces are then
leaded
together using different width "H" section lead strips. ''

''When the panel is fully leaded
it is scrubbed with a wire brush and flux is then applied to the joins.
It is then soldered first one side then the other.''

''When the soldering is
completed, the panel is grouted using a cement.
It is applied with a brush or squeegee to both sides and then cleaned off using
a drying agent.
The panel is then left to set for 24 hours.''

''When the panel has dried, the excess grout is cleaned off and
both sides are polished to darken the lead.
Then it's time to fit the work!''

The finished piece.
